Chapter 17

Lucy

Present…

With sweaty palms, I opened the front door. Unreadable green eyes collided with mine. I knew Nic was coming. However, no amount of warning could have prepared me for facing him today. Not after I ran out on him after sex two days ago. He hadn’t come after me. He hadn’t called. I had no idea how he felt or what was going on in his head as he studied me with a polite smile.

“Lucy!”

I was pulled from Nic’s hypnotizing gaze when Kelsy flung her arms around my waist. Letting out a laugh, I embraced her after a moment’s hesitation. I wasn’t expecting such an enthusiastic greeting since I’d only spent a few days shadowing Nic, and Kelsy had mostly been at school or at her grandmother’s.

“Hi, Kelsy. It’s so good to see you again. I’m glad you came.”

The little girl beamed up at me. Goodness, it was like looking at a female-child version of Nic. So cute. “Me too. Daddy said I’m going to meet your sisters. Are there really five of you?”

“Yup, there are quite a few of us.”

“Cool! Daddy, how come I don’t have that many sisters or brothers?”

Nic’s eyes widened, and despite my discomfort about confronting him, I snickered. He looked horrified.

“Because, kiddo, I can only manage one little rascal at a time.”

Kelsy harrumphed, pouted, and moved on quickly. She stepped inside and looked around. “Lucy, do you live here?”

“Not anymore. I grew up in this house, but only one of my sisters lives here now.”

“And Daddy and Grams lived in the one beside it. Daddy said you were his best friend.”

I smiled. “That’s true.”

“Are you still best friends?”

I felt my smile slip just a little. What a hard question to answer. I sure wish we were. I looked at Nic for help, but he only smirked and crossed his arms, waiting for my answer. I glared at him.

“Uh, well…”

“They’re here! Oh, my gosh, is that Kelsey?” Tessa rounded the corner with April and Cassandra on her heels. She lifted Kesley off her feet in an embrace. Kelsey didn’t seem to mind. Her little giggles brightened the entire living room of my childhood home. Grinning, Tessa put Kelsey back on her feet and launched herself at Nic. He caught her in an embrace, his laugh resounding in the foyer.

Tessa finally put together that welcome home dinner for Nic. I knew it was coming because I knew my sister. I just wished it wasn’t right after I slept with Nic and hightailed it out of his house. I’d have to sit through a long dinner and listen to my sisters catch up with Nic while I stewed in guilt and embarrassment. It was going to be an awesome evening.

April squealed. Her bohemian dress swished around her legs as she hurried towards us. Hands on her knees, she stooped to Kesley’s level. “My, my, you are the most adorable little girl I’ve ever seen.” Glancing up, she beamed. “Nic, she looks just like you. I knew you’d have beautiful children.
